I've never had much trouble with my shoelaces -- the normal bow seems to hold fine. I've some indication that a lot of trouble comes from tying it as a granny knot, and not as a square knot. Do you know if you were using one over the other?

In both the regular and modified bow, I've found that the square-knot version is both more secure, and more likely to tangle when undoing (perhaps because the loops lie neatly in line with the ends). Usually what I do now is to actually use the granny version of the modified bow -- but it depends a lot on the laces.

The pair of shoes that got me thinking about this, was the boots I liked to wear to yoga (a 5-min walk down the block, for me) this winter; although I normally was in the habit of double-knotting them as a matter of course, it seemed a pain for such a short trip -- yet a normal bow, tied either way, would fall apart every time in the stiff, circular laces of that pair.

There are, certainly, many shoes with laces that will hold a bow just fine under normal conditions.
