I had also forgotten about that discussion, but it wasn't the one where I originally came up with the idea. :) I've been doing this for a couple years now I think, at least the carabiner method -- the daisy chain version is newer, maybe not much older than that thread. The original thread that inspired it I believe actually involved Jack, and maybe also Tatu, and I think started on an unrelated topic.
You definitely could -- but the wear on the bight should be pretty minimal anyway, with it only taking 1/3rd of the load and being fixed in place against a smooth carabiner. It tends to be rope-on-rope friction, and, to a lesser extent, tight knots, that really beat the rope up.
For situations where the bight is attaching to a carabiner by itself and taking a lot of load, the Cat's Paw (which is like a multiple Lark's Head) is a good solution.

Why not put a larks head around the carabiner instead of just the bight? Seems like it'd help reduce the wear and tear on the bight.
