Common Whipping

Notes and Resources:

Whipping is a way of keeping the ends of rope from unraveling by wrapping them with thread/twine. The Common Whipping is the simplest and fastest technique, and doesn't require a needle; however it is not very secure. A good choice for cheap rope that you don't expect to use for a long time.

I love this! The rope tops I have watched normally use some type of tape. This approach is much more respectful to the tradition of knot tying.

This actually came up at a great time. I was wondering how to finish off my rope ends after cutting it down to size. I eventually decided on a simple knotted end.
